The central focus of my work is my lived experience. I create in many different forms such as sculpture, digital art, writing and textiles. However, oil paint continues to be my most intimate and meaningful medium. I often use creatures from mythology and occult symbolism in my paintings as a means to portray feelings of loss and struggles with mental health. The occult and the macabre are endlessly fascinating to me and prove to be very powerful methods of conveying emotions.
My work is ever evolving and has lately consisted of large scale oil paintings along with fictional story telling. This series is ongoing and depicts mythical creatures, of my own design, in various settings of distress and mortality. Its foundation is built upon the need to translate loss into a form I can digest, therefore allowing me to better understand myself.
My desire to create stems from necessity, I crave connection forged through human suffering. Oftentimes, my biggest wish is for my audience to simply see even a fraction of themselves in my paintings, a reflection of their own hardships.
Adalia Rios is a multimedia artist living in Portland Oregon. Rios is in her fourth and final year of the Bachelors of Fine Art program at Portland State University where she will graduate with a BFA in Art Practice this spring. While Rios works with sculpture, writing, digital art and textiles, her most prolific medium is oil paint.
Rios’s work centers around her lived experiences with grief and mental health. Mythological creatures and fantastical scenery are motifs commonly found in her work, along with the occult and macabre. Often seen as dabbling between expressionism and surrealism, Rios uses bold symbolism to portray feelings of loss and the desire to escape.
Rios’s work has been featured in multiple Portland State University affiliated galleries and exhibitions. She currently works at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, where she navigates professional gallery culture first hand.
